Finding The Right Case

Posted by

Picking out the right case can be confusing. With so many options it’s important to know some of the differences. Some cases are designed for looks, and some for durability. No one wants to get a fancy, flimsy case when they are going to go mountain climbing. On the flip side, you don’t want a bulky, cumbersome case when you’re looking to show off your cool new Galaxy S4.

Basically, the more bulky the case, the more likely it is to protect your phone from a nasty fall. Let’s take a look at a few different cases and what they offer.

Pouches

If ease and access are important to you, a phone pouch is the way to go. These things are really designed more for scratch protection than anything. Pouch cases like the Trexta Lifter Leather Pouch Case for the Galaxy S4 are usually made out of leather, with a soft interior lining. They allow you to easily slide your phone out, allowing for quick access. You won’t be getting much drop protection from these, but they will make your phone look very stylish.

Book-type cases

If you’re looking for something sleek and functional, you can’t go wrong with a wallet or flip case. Often popular with the ladies, the flip case makes for a cute alternative to the other, bulkier options. Flip cases such as the Hypergear ID Flip Case have an easy flip cover for quick access to all your phone’s features. When closed, the two halves of the case are securely held together by a magnetic strip. But perhaps the best part about this type of case is that they often double as a wallet. Featuring slots for ID and credit cards, you’ll only need to worry about one thing matching your outfit!

Soft silicone and TPU cases

If you want something slim that will guard against scratches while providing some drop protection, a TPU case is worth considering. Because of their flexible mold, TPU cases are often form fitting, allowing for ultra low-profile security. They don’t offer quite as much defense as some of their harder counterparts, but what they lack in protection they make up for in design. These cases are perfect for someone who wants to protect their phone, without adding any extra bulk. They often have a rubberized texture allowing for a good grip too. Try the Amzer Soft Gel TPU Case for the iPhone 5s.

Bumper cases

A lot like underwear, bumper cases cover the important parts and flaunt the rest. Lining the outside edges of your phone, these cases guard the high impact areas. They are perfect for people who want a minimalist look without sacrificing protection. They are usually made of metal or hard plastic, and feature raised edges allowing your phone to be placed face down on flat surfaces without scuffing the screen. If you’ve got an iPhone the Hypergear Aircraft Aluminum Bumper Case comes highly recommended.

Rubberized hard cases

The next step up from the bumper is the classic hard case. Covering the entirety of your phone minus the screen, they offer a bit more protection. Without adding too much bulk, these types of cases do a great job at keeping your phone safe and are often the most popular. They provide a perfect balance between protection and sleekness. If you simply want to keep your phone safe but don’t want something bulky, this is your best bet. Try looking at the Incipio Feather Hard Case for the iPhone 4s.

Combo cases

And here we have the most durable, protective case you can get. Combo cases typically consist of multiple layers of protective material. Most of the time they have an inner gel TPU layer surrounded by a hard plastic outer shell. Aside from turning your phone into a tank, these cases often offer a number of features including belt clips, kickstands, and screen protectors.
